[Europe Trip] Day 5

Left the hotel early and walked to train station. Took the 8.04am train to Luzern, followed by 9.08am train to Alpnachstad. Upon arrival we purchased tickets and rushed to Pilatus Bahn, getting into the striking red funicular traveling on the steepest railway in the world. Not long after, the 25 mins ride started.

At the top of Mt Pilatus, the view was awesome. The place was surprisingly empty, I guess it might be because of the non favorable weather forecast that predicted rain in the afternoon and snow in the evening. There are a few hotels and restaurants there - which looked vacant too.

The climb up to the peak took 10-15 mins, depending on how many times you stop for photo-taking. I snapped a few pictures of white flowers, not quite sure if they really were edelweiss, but turned out they were!

At the peak, we could see the alps - their peaks covered in a little bit of snow, hills, valleys, lakes, rivers, fields, villages.. and the clouds were underneath us. There's little wonder why there's this sign nailed there: "Kommet her und sehet an die Werke Gottes, der so wunderbar ist!" (Psalm 66:5) - "Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works are!"

On the way down we chose to ride aerial cableway followed by gondola. It turned out our choice for rushing to the top as early as possible was right, as it started raining and the fog thickened very quickly on our way down. The visibility from our gondola was really poor, looked like the whole area was going to be covered in fog.

And the weather forecast turned out to be correct. It was a wet, cloudy, gloomy afternoon. We had our lunch, checked-in to our hotel and took the tram to Luzern HB. Explored the shops in the train station for a while, hoping the rain would stop. Fat chance. So we made a dash under our jackets' hoods to Keppelbrucke. And spent some time in Starbucks, sipping hot chocolate and caramel macchiato while surfing the net.

We braved the drizzling rain again and strolled around the area. Stumbled upon a restaurant selling cheese fondue and decided impulsively to have our dinner right there and then. Ordered bacon & cheese rosti, cheese fondue and hot tea.
