Half a day in Orchard Rd

Took half a day off today to clear our leaves, and off we went to Orchard for some dining, shopping and soaking on Christmas festivities.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

We had lunch at K.Cook Korean BBQ buffet. Considering it's a weekday, I didn't make a booking and had to wait for a while for a a table. The place was actually packed. Luckily they have a good queueing system - we keyed in the group size and contact number on a device at the entrance and an sms was sent containing a link with updates on the queue progress. When a table was ready the staff gave us a call.

The restaurant is located on 7th floor in Orchard Central, half of it is outdoor with high ceiling and huge fan, another half is indoor. Grill pans are placed on tables, together with tongs and scissors. The decorations are simple but look good.

Food variety was alright. There were 3 types of salad, cut fruits (oranges and watermelon), fruit dessert,  some cooked dishes (rice cakes, glass noodles, rice, chicken wings, scallion pancake), and meat of course (beef bulgogi, pork belly, pork collar, marinated pork collar, marinated chicken, spicy chicken and sausages). There were also some side dishes like kimchi, radish, lettuce, sliced onions, enoki mushroom. Coke, sprite, fanta and ice water for drinks. For $14.90++ (price of weekday lunch), it's worth it.

Service was good too. Food was replenished promptly and dirty plates were cleared quickly. The not-so-good part of the lunch was the heat - it's really warm sitting outdoor in front of a smoking grill. And also that bbq smell that came home with us :)

Reminiscing the days

One day, in one of our many whatsapp chats, somebody suggested a visit to NTU. And the plan materialized this afternoon: 4 families touring the campus with 1 tour guide :p

We met up at Canteen 2, then started the tour in cars. Stopping at North Spine, we took a walk to what used to be Canteen A, took some photos and then finally back to Canteen 2 for dinner.

So much have changed in the campus. We entered the compound through Jalan Bahar. Turning left, we saw a new green building that was not there years ago. Took a wrong turn and had to turn back :) The halls of residence still stay the same. From hall 11 down to hall 1 - they're exactly the same. The canteen has been improved, though. Canteen 2 now is equipped with air con. The mom-and-pop store where I used to buy bread is now replaced by Giant and 7-11.

Canteen A is totally gone, replaced by Student Activity Centre. Another canteen was built at the side, which is much smaller. Some cafes, convenient stores and fast-food chains have made their presence too. Vast green field in between the spines (North spine has N1, N2, N3, N4) is now filled with new buildings. Too bad the main library was already closed, as the children wanted to go in so much.

We had dinner at Canteen 2, followed by mini birthday celebration with a scarlet cheesecake for our tour leader whose birthday was the day before. Stayed until 9.30pm there.

Angry Bird Party

Organized an Angry Bird-themed birthday party and it went well, despite the flu & cough bugs that have been making rounds recently.

All things angry birds were prepared: invitation, goodie bags, piƱata, cake, poster, decorations.

Staycation at The Regent

Our short getaway continued with a staycation at The Regent Hotel, as we managed to secure a friendly rate. And we also sneaked some time out for late night supper at PS Cafe Harding Road :)

What we like:
- The special welcome drink (strawberry milk) and gingerbread cookie complete with shaved chocolate,  prepared specially for children
- L'occitane toiletries
- Great service at the swimming pool. Children's swimming accessories are provided. We were served ice water with lemon and some orange slices.
- Good service and buffet food selection at the Basilico

What we don't like:
- Hotel's location that is quite a distance from Orchard Road
- No complimentary parking coupon
- No toothbrushes provided in the room (but we can always request for it, though)

And I have tomorrow to look forward to
For God has given me you
To have and to hold

To cherish and honor
To love and call my very own
To share all I am with
Body heart and soul
You are mine as I am yours
All my days, all my life
To have and to hold

Attended my very first baking workshop at Creative Culinaire, which I signed up on impulse some time last month.

I arrived at the school 20 mins prior to the start time and was pleasantly surprised to find out that they provided drinks and slices of cafe's signature cake for us. We were advised to come at 8.50am to allow some time to settle down before the class started at 9am. But the class started a little late, they said there were 3 courses running concurrently and they did look overwhelmed - not all the logistics were ready and we had to wait every now and then for them to fetch this and that.

3 recipes were tried out: christmas logcake, chocolate rochers and tea truffles. The logcake was actually cream covered swiss roll with ganache filling, the only one that required baking. For all of the recipes, we watched the chef demonstrated how the ingredients were prepared. After that she would distribute the almost-final products to us to finish up.

Tea Truffles

For tea truffles we filled in chocolate shells with ganache filling using piping bags and then decorated them. For rochers we mixed the melted chocolate with nuts and rice puffs, scooped them into baking paper and let them set. Log cake was the most challenging: we put in the ganache filling, rolled it up, set it on a cardboard, smeared it with cream and decorated it.

Chocolate Rochers with Almond Nut

I was actually expecting a more hands-on session in which I could try all the steps, instead of only finishing up the almost-final products. But for that I guess I need to sign up for proper baking classes, definitely not to be done on impulse :p

Christmas Logcake

We got another pleasant surprise at the end of the workshop (that stretched to 4 hours from the scheduled 3 hours) - our group was selected as happiest, friendliest group from the way we worked together. We were given $10 voucher which we used right away at the cafe. I picked this cranberry cheesecake slice. Oh, our group name was 8 stable hands.. ;)

Today, twenty third of June, was supposed to be my due date. But the precious little one was born earlier on the fifth. And now I can add a new role in my CV of life.

We had an evening picnic at Botanical Garden, finally. Thank God for the fine weather. The rain had poured in the morning and so we had nice and warm evening. Last month our plan was canceled on the last minute due to heavy downpour.

There was a free concert titled Chopin by the Lake, dedicated to Fryderyk Chopin's 200th birth anniversary. 3 well-known pianists went on stage, 2 of them performed pieces by Chopin.

The venue was packed with people. Most of them brought mats and food. We had fried bee hoon, martabak telur, klappertart and fruits while watching the concert. Yum!

To mark the opening of Singapore Arts Festival 2010, a free outdoor performance was held this weekend called Invitation to Dream - A Fire Garden Installation at Empress Place precinct, which comprised of the outdoor section in front of Victoria Theatre, Asian Civilization Museum and further to Esplanade Park.

Fire was lit on clay pots, and the clay pots were arranged to form different unique structures - rotating ferris wheels, globes, etc. Some exhibitions used towering metal tubes, white sleeveless t-shirts, brown balls, all with element of fire inside them.

It's definitely one of its kind - unique, interesting and hot! :)

truly mesmerized by the spectacular olympic opening ceremony. the grandness of it all...

anyway, I was wondering why the local singer dressed so casually when singing the theme song together with sarah brightman on top of the 'globe'. just a simple black t-shirt and pants.. the contingents parade was really unique, the countries were marching based on the number of strokes it takes to write their names in chinese. there was no way for me to guess which country would march in next. it was such an educational show as well, there were so many countries whose names I never heard before.. hmmm...
